PORTAGE — A local family is homeless following a fire Saturday morning.
The Portage Fire Department responded to the report of a fire at 80 Cottage Street around 11:30 a.m. April 24. Firefighters found the interior of the structure burning upon arrival.
The home, owned by Clair and Judy Moreau, sustained extensive damage to the inside, including water damage. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from destroying the structure. The interior and all the owners’ belongings were destroyed. The couple had reportedly resided at the home for over 50 years.
About 15 firefighters from the Portage and Ashland fire departments responded. Crews were on scene for a couple hours.
The home’s assessed value was $36,200. It is believed the home was insured. Officials believe the fire was electrical in nature.
Plans are under way for a community fund-raiser for the family, possibly in the form of benefit supper. For more information, contact the Town Office at 435-4361.
