Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, April 6, at 6:30 a.m. Members discussed the upcoming pageants as well as the Health Fair to be held on May 1 at Fort Street Elementary School.    The special guests were the 2010 Miss Greater Mars Hill contestants and the pageant directors. Mikala Woollard, Greater Miss director, spoke of the planning that goes into each pageant. The planning typically starts in early February so each contestant has plenty of time to prepare their outfits and work on their talent. Kassandra Dominique, Little Miss director, spoke of the six Little Miss contestants. Janine Stackpole, Greater Miss assistant director, spoke of different aspects of the pageant. They work together as a team and appreciate all the help they get from other individuals.

Each of the contestants introduced themselves and spoke of their planned talent. Contestants include: Paige Findlen, Brittni Mosher, Aryn Bernier, Rachel Donovan, Marci-Rae Mean and Sarah Michaud. With this talented and beautiful group, the pageant should be very entertaining.

Students raise $1,150

The fifth-grade students at Fort Street Elementary School in Mars Hill collected Pennies for Patients® to benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society during the month of March. The students coordinated the penny drive by planning an assembly, writing morning announcements and planning additional activities. After three weeks of the Fort Street students bringing in their spare change, the total was $1,150! The students would like to thank everyone who rolled coins and give a special thanks to Donna Chasse for all of her help. Thanks also to Katahdin Trust Company for counting the coins.
“I am so proud of our students,” said Elaine Boulier, school principal at Fort Street. “They did a great job of giving selflessly and they really understood the mission of the Pennies for Patients® program and what the money is used for.”
Leukemia is the leading cause of disease-related deaths among children. An estimated 785,829 Americans have a blood cancer. Since 1992, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 12 million elementary, middle and high school students nationwide.
The mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Senior citizens

The Mars Hill, Blaine and Westfield Senior Citizens met at the Mars Hill Snowmobile Club on Wednesday, April 7, at 11 a.m. for a potluck dinner. There were 14 members and one guest present.
President Gwen McEntee opened the meeting, asked the blessing and gave the invocation. Following the flag salute, members sang “God Bless America.”
The special speaker was Mona Lynch, who spoke about health reform and five straight facts on health. She also answered questions from the group. She then played Medicare bingo (MEDCO) with the group and had several prizes to give the winners.
The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted. A thank-you note was received from the family of Iris Brewer. Messages were received from Alta Weeks and Doris Guiggey saying that they missed the group. They will be back in the area this summer.
The next meeting will be on April 21, with pizza on the menu.  Members also discussed various outings to go on this spring.
Members are also invited to attend the Northern Maine Council on Aging meeting on April 19 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Fort Fairfield at 9:30 a.m.
