MAPLETON NEWS
by Jennifer Buzza

In continuing their support of the Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C.A.N.C.E.R.), the students, faculty and staff at Mapleton Elementary School will be holding a penny drive from now until May 21. Each classroom will have a container to collect pennies for the next several weeks.

According to Principal Dan Duprey, “The hope is to be able to make a financial donation to the C.A.N.C.E.R. organization at the end of May in time for the spring golf tournament. One hundred percent of all funds raised during the penny drive will be used toward the services this group provides to local families. The school goal is to reach the $100 mark. Donations of this amount are recognized by a sign on one of the holes at the annual golf tournament in early June.”
Let’s work together to show support for this wonderful volunteer group that, according to one of its board members, believes in “neighbors helping neighbors!”

Castle Hill Grange Hall news

The Castle Hill Grange Hall Preservation Society held its monthly meeting March 30. The group voted to have a bake-less sale this year instead of the annual Mother’s Day pie sale. Anyone wishing to donate to the sale can contact any group member.
The first project the society will take on will be piping heat to the bathrooms. The hall is available to rent from May 1-Nov. 1 for a fee of $100. The group still has a few candy bars for sale. They are being sold at Clukey’s Auto in Presque Isle and the Mapleton Town Office.
New members are desperately needed to keep the hall open. Community members are encouraged to join the society to see that the necessary repairs are completed. Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. from February through November. Please consider donating one hour a month to assure that this 105-year-old building continues to be a well cared for landmark in our community.

Free Movie Night

The Mapleton Daze Committee is sponsoring a free Family Movie Night Saturday, April 24 starting at 6:30 p.m. The movie, “Hotel for Dogs,” will be shown at the Mapleton Lion’s Hall at 7 p.m. Families are encouraged to arrive early to get a good viewing spot and to purchase some refreshments that will be available before the movie starts. Come enjoy some family time together while supporting the hardworking Mapleton Daze Committee!

Benefit supper

There will be a benefit supper for Mapleton resident Marie Hare Saturday, April 17 from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Mapleton Lion’s Hall. Upstairs there will be a variety of silent auction items to bid on. Marie, along with her husband, Ray, have just returned from the Dana Farber Institute in Boston. The supper menu includes baked beans, ham, coleslaw, chop suey, rolls and gingerbread with whipped cream for dessert. A suggested donation of $6 for adults and $3 for children under 6 years old will be taken at the door.
Columbia Forest Products has generously donated two cords of wood – valued at $100 each – for the auction. There are also several handmade baby sweater sets, household items and gift certificates that will be included in the silent auction. A large selection of baked goods will also be for sale.
For those wishing to make a donation but unable to attend may do so by sending checks payable to Marie Hare in care of Debbie Sawyer, supper chairperson, at 258 Dudley Road, Castle Hill, Maine 04757. Donations are also being accepted for the auction. For more information, please call Debbie at 764-1735.
