    FORT FAIRFIELD – The Aroostook County Youth Basketball Tournament, for girls in grade 6 and under, was held March 19 and 20 at the community center gymnasium.

    Washburn captured the 10-team event, defeating Limestone in the finals, 25-22.
    In the title game, Limestone led by a point at halftime, but Taylor Howe scored eight of her game-high 14 points in the third quarter as Washburn took the lead for good.
    Laina Mette tossed in seven points, all in the first half, while Emmy Churchill and Natalie Doody netted two points each for the winners.
    For Limestone, Chelsey Pelkey paced the offense with eight points. Kassie Albert notched six, while Shaniah Bell and Madison Staples totaled four each.
    Washburn’s road to the finals included a 24-9 win over Caribou in the quarterfinal and a 29-12 triumph over Mars Hill in the semifinals.

    Limestone topped Madawaska in the first round, 26-17, before stopping Fort Fairfield in the semis, 22-13.
    Other teams participating were Easton, Ashland, Presque Isle, Mars Hill and St. Agatha.
    Selected to the all-tournament team were Mette and Howe of Washburn, Pelkey and Albert of Limestone, Kayla Giberson of Fort Fairfield and Carly Levesque of Mars Hill.
