PRESQUE ISLE – Have you thought of starting your own business as a residential electrician? Want to stay in the construction-related trade but move to a different specialty? The Limited Electrical License: House Wiring option is the pathway to your goals.
As part of an ongoing statewide initiative to increase the number of licensed electricians in the field, Northern Maine Community College is offering this training opportunity in a condensed format that will enable participants to complete in 10 months. This training package will meet the educational requirements of a “Limited to House Wiring” electrical license in the state of Maine, which is defined as at least 225 hours of electrical education and 4,000 hours of licensed experience. This license restricts the electrician to one and two family dwellings and includes modular and mobile homes.
The Limited Electrical License: House Wiring option consists of five courses that will be offered in an evening format between April 2010 and January 2011. The first course in the series, Electricity I, is scheduled to run April 7-July 14 on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The remaining courses in the series include Electricity II, Blueprint Reading, Controls I, and National Electrical Code. Each course costs $425, plus the cost of the text.
“In Maine, as well as nationwide, the new construction and renovation of homes has put intense pressure on the market for skilled trades people – most notably electricians,” said Brian McDougal, trade and technical occupations department chair at NMCC and a long-time instructor for the college’s electrical construction program. “This limited license option is a great option for someone who wants to start their own business as a residential electrician.”
