Houlton’s 5-6 grade girls basketball travel team celebrated a successful tournament run this winter going on an undefeated 17-0 run, as champions over the span of four competitive tournaments.
The girls competed in one local tournament, the Southern Aroostook Community School Tournament, as well as three others in the greater Bangor area, including the Hampden Bronco’s Tourney, the Old Town/Orono YMCA Bob Messier Invitational Tournament and the Bangor YMCA Maine Basketball Festival. The girls defeated numerous teams, including East Millinocket, Ellsworth, Brewer, Narraguagus, MDI, Hampden, Gardiner, Bangor, Old Town and Orono.
The Lady Shires’ offense scored a total of 568 points for an average of 33 points per game, while their stifling defense only allowed 267 points for an average of only 15 points per game.
“The girls’ positive work ethic, their ability to grasp new offensive and defensive strategies quickly, as well as the dedication and support of their families, played an integral part in the team’s success,” said coach Ben Drew.
