Last Saturday, the Monument Lodge of Houlton was the site of the Aroostook Chess Championship.
Bangor’s best player, Steve Abrahams, took first place after knocking out Maine champion Roger Morin of Houlton in the last round. Roger Peterson of Calais and Ed Nevells of Bradford tied for second, while Morin, Ray Haines of Fort Fairfield and Roger Hardison of Caribou placed fourth through sixth. Rounding out the field were final prize winners John Ellison of Etna and Lance BeLoungie of Caribou.
The Masonic Lodge of Houlton sponsored the event with a prize fund of $400, and Houlton quilter Lois Morin was the tournament director.
“We drew more highly-rated players to this tournament than we have seen in Bangor,” said Lois Morin. “To be highly-rated, you have to score close to 2,000 points to be an expert.”
