Letter writer has no idea

To the editor:
As management and a kennel cleaner for the Houlton Humane Society, I was sickened by Jennifer Hughes’ letter to the editor in last week’s paper. I have worked for the Humane Society for 10 years and have taken many classes on maintaining a shelter. I have seen everything from giardia to feline leukemia and now ringworm.
We have a state-of-the-art shelter complete with an air exchange. It just proves that ringworm happens to everyone, no matter what the conditions are. And when it does, it spreads like wildfire.
The decisions Heather and I had to make in the last few weeks were the toughest, hardest and most unselfish ones we have ever had to make. Ms. Hughes, for you to judge us for that, shame on you! Because I believe education is everything, I would like to invite Ms. Hughes to come join me in cleaning, see our procedures and help me sulfur dip six dogs and 35 cats. Maybe she can give me some tips.
I feel everyone need to know Ms. Hughes is very uneducated on ringworm. She states she is not a vet, and that's obvious. She is clueless about the subject. Vets go on facts not hearsay. I ask you, the public, to ignore Ms. Hughes’ interpretation and speak with your vet about the spread of ringworm if you are concerned.
On a different note, I want to apologize to our wonderful staff and volunteers for Ms. Hughes’ assumption that you do not do a good job cleaning. If she had ever been to the shelter she would know that’s not the case. You all do an awesome job caring for the animals.
As for Ms. Hughes, I suggest you do some research and consult your veterinarian before you write to the local paper on issues you know nothing about.
