Lisa Dayringer, a senior at Easton Jr./ Sr. High School, has been selected to receive the 2010 Maine Principal’s Award, Principal Georgette Ireland has announced. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principal’s Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
Dayringer
“Lisa has always contributed in positive ways and excelled as a student, athlete and citizen in the school and the community,” Ireland noted in making the award. “She is very deserving of this recognition.”
Dayringer, Ireland and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center in Bangor on Saturday, April 3, at 1 p.m. The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with a presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association. The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 140 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.

The Easton Happy Days Seniors’ Club met at the West Ridge Manor on Thursday, March 25, with 17 members and two guests present.
The club took a vacation from cooking their usual potluck dishes and instead were served a delicious Chinese dinner. Lois Ladner drove to the Mall to pick it up.
After the meal, Lorena Sullivan introduced the speaker of the day, Margo Cerrato, who is senior manager of the Presque Isle Dialysis Center. Mrs. Cerrato originally came from Newfoundland and has worked in the Middle East, New Mexico and Canada, before coming to Caribou to begin working in Presque Isle. Lorena Sullivan works with her and has received her National Certified Dialysis Technician degree.
Cerrato explained that dialysis is a life support system that cleans the system and helps pass water when there is renal failure from diabetes or hypertension, poor diets or obesity of epidemic proportions. Here in this area it is mostly diabetes and hypertension that causes the need for it. In the Mid-East, it is mostly inbreeding and genetics.
It is hard at first to come to terms with anger and denial. Patients have to be subjected to two or three hours, three times a week of dialysis, for life, or undergo a kidney transplant. She said that it is hard for the technicians because they sometimes become attached to the patients; they become like family.
They have recently procured a blanket warmer which is great comfort to the patients. Because they have 52 patients right now and could take more, they are hoping that they may be able to expand the facility in the future.
For a kidney transplant, patients sometimes have to wait three to five years and the procedure has to be done in Portland.
After the guests left, President Nina Trask opened the meeting with the salute to the flag and the singing of “America,” with Liana Demerchant at the piano. The treasurer called the roll with these members present: Nina and John Trask, Liana and Paul Demerchant, Lindy Fowler, Rena Richardson, Arlene Ladner, Joann Johnson, Rogena Thomas, Ailene Embelton, Elizabeth Martin, Marie Hewitt, Lois Ladner, Eldora Carter, Glenice Craig, Ezalee Smith and Ida Doak.
Secretary Eldora Carter read the minutes of the last meeting and Treasurer Ida Doak gave her report. Both reports were accepted as read.
As Lois and Elizabeth had to leave early, Lois showed some of the things she got when she was in China in 2006: scrolls, scarves, fans, etc. She also showed a flyer of the hotel they stayed in while there. She said that it was beautiful but you couldn’t drink the water or even brush your teeth with it, it was so polluted; bottled water was all you could use. They visited Bejing and Shanghi and some of the smaller cities around these two. She said that there would be a million or more residents in just one of these cities, and thousands of Budas everywhere.
It was voted to pick up some small items for the next meeting, for the Dialysis Center patients, as they play Bingo while they wait.
The president read a thank-you letter from the Senior Class at the Easton Jr./ Sr. High School for the donation to Project Graduation. She also read a letter from Kara Miller about the District Council Meeting of the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging, which the Club already knew about. Miller also wrote that she offered to talk to the Club on health which also had been done recently by Dottie Sines, and Miller wrote that she does give foot massages for $25.
The past members’ plaque needed to be updated and John Trask volunteered to get that done. The names to be put on were: Clarence Richardson, Aldine Wortman, Hilda Langeley and Olive Bolster. It was voted to make a donation to the Kendall Bolster/Brenda Greenleaf Scholarship Fund at the high school in memory of Olive Bolster. A motion was made to adjourn.
