Spring Carnival

The Fort Street Elementary School PTCO will hold their annual Spring Carnival on Saturday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school. There will be many games and contests for the kids to enjoy as well as hotdogs and other refreshments available for sale.
Tickets will cost $5 for 25. The rain date is April 24.

Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, March 30, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. Members discussed the upcoming pageants on April 10 and the Health Fair planned for May 1.
The special guests were the CAHS cheerleading squad along with their coach, Sami Allen, and assistant coach, Janice Mosher. Coach Allen spoke to the Rotarians about the cheerleaders and the work they have done that has enabled them to win the State Class D title for three years in a row — 2008, 2009 and 2010!
The team members work a couple of days a week through the summer and practice six days a week in the winter for a couple of hours each day. The squad works on all aspects of their routine, but concentrates on gymnastics.
Early in the season, the coaches and some of the veteran squad members begin working on their music and choreography. The cheerleaders enjoy working together as a team — united in a common goal.
Copies of “I Remember When in Mars Hill” are now on sale at the Mars Hill Town Office and at the Mars Hill Pharmacy. At a cost of $25, these books include 37 stories of Mars Hill through the years. Written by various individuals, there are stories and memories about local and farm families, sports, Main Street, postal service, Eagle Scouts and much more.

Scholarship program

First Wind, an independent U.S.-based wind energy company, recently announced the availability of its First Wind Scholars program to high school students residing in each community where the company currently has a project in operation or in an advanced stage of development. First Wind Scholars offers one-time $3,000 scholarships to support local high school students who display strong potential for a successful college experience, as well as interest in the environment, energy or the sciences.
As many as 10 scholarships will be granted to qualified students. In addition, First Wind will provide one renewable scholarship of $5,000 for up to four years to the most qualified student.
“We are pleased to offer our successful First Wind Scholars program to our project sites throughout the Northeast,” said Carol Grant, senior vice president of external affairs at First Wind. “Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders, and we hope that this program will support young people who show interest in and the capacity to contribute to the fields of environment, energy and science.”
The First Wind Scholars program will be open to high school seniors in communities served by one of First Wind’s area locations.
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, students will need a GPA of 3.0 or higher and plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study majoring in earth and/or environmental sciences, technology or engineering. Applications are open and available online as of today with all submissions due by May 1.
Judging will be based on a number of factors, including academic performance, work experience, school and community activities and a 300-word essay. The program and selection of recipients is administered by Scholarship Management Services, a leading designer and manager of scholarship and tuition reimbursement programs for corporations and others. The names of the scholarship recipients will be announced in late May 2010.
Students residing in Mars Hill — Home of the Mars Hill Wind project — will be eligible to apply for the scholarship. For more information on this program or to complete an application, students can visit www.firstwind.com/firstwindscholars.
