On Friday February 12, the Developmental Asset Team spent a day at the Caribou Recreation Center participating in activities about the External Assets they had been learning about this year.     The Developmental Asset Team is a team of students at Caribou Middle School that learns about 40 Assets that make a person’s life better, and helps them make good choices. The team consists of seventh grade students, Nathan Wall, Nathan Wyman, Katie Pelletier, Sara Doak, and eighth grade students Keith Draper, Emmanuel Bouchard, Sara Hamlin, and Krista Beaupre.
Throughout the training day the team participated in activities to do with the assets of Support, Boundaries and Expectations, Empowerment, and Constructive Use of Time.
Nathan Wall thought that “The day was filled with fun and useful activities that will be helpful in the school year.”
Some of the activities done for support were, A Meaningful Gift, where students wrote a personal characteristic that would be a valuable asset in someone’s life on a piece of paper, which was put together to complete a puzzle of characteristics. The Web of Support activity had students make a web by stating names of different people they supported and people that supported them.
An activity done with Boundaries and Expectations was the Powers of Persuasion where the student’s goal was to try to persuade their teammates to complete the role that was on a card, without the teammates knowing that they were trying to persuade them.
For the asset of Empowerment the team did an activity called, Share and Tell. Working in partner groups, each partner told something about themselves and the other partner had to write one positive thing about what their partner said.
The final activities the team did were about Constructive use of Time. One of the activities was a poster of positive clubs and activities, such as sports, music and service clubs they could participate in.
Nathan Wyman said about his experience, “I learned a lot of activities that help people.”? while Keith Draper commented, “ I got to do fun activities and have a different understanding of the assets.”
The Developmental Asset Team has tentative plans to provide future information to their fellow students at Caribou Middle School this spring.
