NEW SWEDEN — A lot can happen around the dinner table: children can regale parents with fantastic stories about their day, siblings occasionally find humor in their mutual dislike of Brussels sprouts and on Wednesday, March 24, at the New Sweden School, students, parents, and community members can become educated about substance abuse. The free, School Union 122 Annual Education Night, while informative and engaging, will not be the standard dull-as-dishwater public service announcement. Instead, guest speakers have geared their presentations for specific age groups to make discussion relevant, meaningful and age appropriate.
Dinner will be served from 5 to 6:15 p.m. and child care for children ages six and under will be available from 5:30 to 6:40 p.m.
Youth programs run from 5:40 until 6:40 p.m.: grades one through four will be discussing anti-tobacco activities; grades five and six will be talking about anti-drug activities, and grades seven and eight will discuss obtaining a natural high.
Adult programs, broken down into three 20-minute sessions will discuss underage drinking, inhalant abuse prevention and prescription drugs.
From 6:45 to 7:15 p.m., participants will return to the gymnasium to hear a presentation on substance abuse by Kathy Mazzuchelli, member of the Community Alcohol and Drug Education Team (CADET) , and Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan. The evening will be concluded with a show choir performance.
