Girls’ basketball teams stay busy

    The County Youth Basketball Organization of America (YBOA) girls spring basketball teams for grades 9 and 11 kicked off their seasons in Bangor and Fairfield March 6 and 7.

    Both teams went 2-3 on the weekend, winning games in Bangor and losing three games in Fairfield.
The freshman team defeated Lincoln, 30-29 after Mariah Wiley of GHCA hitting free throws to seal the win. Alexa Massey of Caribou scored nine points and Rebecca McDougal of Caribou added six more for the County.
In their second game, MDI stayed close until the final period when the County used a 12-1 scoring run to win 44-31. Marina Cameron of Houlton High School led the way with 15 points, while Kate Bubar of Caribou netted 12 more.
The junior County team started the weekend with a 29-24 win over the Maine Fusion, with Jasmine Rockwell of Southern Aroostook Community School pacing the team with 12 points.
In game two, the junior team defeated MDI 41-24, with Erin Dugal of Madawaska leading a well-balanced scoring attack with nine points, while Shelby Hartin of Southern Aroostook Community School and Sydney Churchill of Fort Fairfield each tossed in eight points and Rockwell added another seven.
In Fairfield, the County teams combined to play three games in Lawrence.
In game one against the Central Maine Stars, the County girls fell 43-23, with Danielle Tracy of Fort Fairfield and Dugal scoring five points apiece. McDougal added four points in the loss.
In game two, the Gardiner Tigers overtook the County, 41-29. Churchill hit two 3-pointers for six  points, while Dugal and Wiley each chipped in with four points.
In their last game of the weekend, the County girls were defeated 41-26 by the Northstars. According to coach Dave DeMerchant, the game was closer than the score indicated.
Hartin scored eight points, while Massey and Rockwell each dropped in six points.
The County Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) basketball teams grades 9 and 11 played in the Portland area March 13 and 14 and according to coach David DeMerchant, “did really well.”
The ninth graders won two games and tied two, while the 11th graders went 3-1.
The freshmen defeated Falmouth 40-36 in their opening game with McDougal and Massey, both of Caribou, tossing in 13 points apiece. Their next contest against the Lady Patriots was a low-scoring win, 22-15, as Dugal scored six points and Massey added five.
The next game against the Triple Threat was close all the way, DeMerchant said, with the County girls final shot rolling around the rim and out to keep the game tied at 30-all. Massey led the scoring with 14 points and McDougal scored eight and Wiley six more. In their last game, the County tied, as the Madness Team hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Leading the scoring for the County were Cameron, six points; Southern Aroostook’s Kristen Tarr and Houlton’s Tori Hanson, both with five points each. The County freshmen’s record is 4-3-2.
The 16-year-old County Team won their first game, 45-39 over Falmouth behind Hartin, who had 12 points and Dugal added nine. The County won its second game, 21-11 over the Midcoast Warriors, as Rockwell netted eight points and Dugal added seven more to pace the offense.
The County’s third victim was Winslow, 32-25. Rockwell tossed in 10 points, while twin sister Janel netted seven.
The Northstars soundly defeated the County in their last game of the weekend, 39-16. The County team played with five girls, and according to DeMerchant, “ran out of gas.”
The team was led by Hartin and Jasmine Rockwell each with seven points and Kim Levesque of Hodgdon chipped in with two points. The team’s record is 5-4.
