Little Meg, a young, unspayed female does not remember the two or three warm days in late November when she last felt foot-loose and fancy free. Since then she has had to search for food and shelter for herself and her unborn litter. Meg gave birth to five babies recently and fortunately, a kind person brought her to Halfway Home Pet Rescue (HHPR). She is a gentle and quiet mother, very calm for being so young. An adult female cat can have at least three litters a year and an unneutered male cat can easily impregnate over 100 females per year. HHPR cautions pet owners to spay/neuter their pets. These roaming un-sterilized pets will be responsible for thousands of homeless kittens by late May and throughout the summer months. Call the state Help Fix ME program at 1-800 367-1317 for a Fix Me Voucher for only $10. If they are currently short on funding, try calling quite early (8 a.m.) the first day of each month. Consider talking with a vet office and prepaying $10 or so a month until you have a credit for the cost of spaying or neutering your pet. If all else fails, call HHPR at 492-1722 and we will see if we have enough funds to partially help out. Meg's babies will be ready for adoption during the first week of May and Meg herself will be available for adoption after she is spayed. Call 492-1722, or go to www.halfwayhomepetrescue.org and look us up on Petfinder.com.
