Mars Hill Rotarians learn about Career Center
MARS HILL
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, March 9, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center.
The special speaker was Steve Gagnon of the Career Center in Presque Isle. He works mainly with veterans and is responsible for identifying and removing, where possible, significant barriers to employment, developing job opportunities and meeting the employment and training needs of veterans. He also spoke about the many programs available to all individuals seeking employment through the Maine Department of Labor.
The Maine Job Bank has a listing of job openings that can be seen by people throughout the country. Part of the program will also match job openings with those individuals that are looking for work in that area. Businesses can list job openings by going to www.MaineCareerCenter.com.
Other programs available include GTI — the Governor’s Training Initiative that offers help to businesses with training costs. On-the-job training — OJT — is a six-month program offered to cover some costs to companies who help train new workers. The Maine Apprenticeship Program is a two-year one that includes classroom time as well as OJT. The LILA program is a lifelong learning account.
The Maine Career Center in Presque Isle is also available to job seekers who need help with updating resumes, learning interview techniques and more. To learn more, contact the Center at 760-6300 or at 800-635-0357.
Copies of “I Remember When in Mars Hill” are now on sale at the Mars Hill Town Office and at the Mars Hill Pharmacy. At a cost of $25, these books include 37 stories of Mars Hill through the years. Written by various individuals, there are stories and memories about local and farm families, sports, Main Street, postal service, Eagle Scouts and much more.
The March meeting of the Mars Hill United Methodist Women was held in the church vestry on March 8 with 10 members present. Lunch at noon was a sandwich brought from home with drinks and dessert provided by the co-hostesses, Cindy Anderson and Janice Footer.
After an hour of eating and socializing, President Elaine opened the meeting. All repeated the UMW Purpose Pledge and Prayer. Members enjoyed hearing of the acts of kindness undertaken by various members.
The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted as read. A thank-you note was received thanking the unit for completing the Five Star Giving in 2009.
There was much discussion on the upcoming food sale to be held during Winterfest activities at the high school on March 13. Members were reminded to bring their food items to the church on Friday afternoon or early Saturday morning. Janice Footer and Diane Ketchum will take the item to the school. Janice and her committee volunteered to be at CAHS on Friday to set up the tables for the sale.
Everyone is delighted with the 48 new chairs recently purchased for the vestry by the committee headed up by Donna Brewer. It was voted to purchase new vinyl tablecloths. Joan Boone will be responsible for the order.
Cindy and Janice announced a special “retreat” April 23 at the First Methodist Church in Bangor. Members were asked to sign up if interested in attending.
Cindy and Janice were in charge of the program “Prayer and Self-Denial.” All participated in the program emphasizing the increase of faith and giving more thought to sacrificial giving. A special offering was taken for mission projects.
After the benediction, the meeting was adjourned. Those attending were: Elaine Bailey, Judy Sawin Stahnke, Diane Ketchum, Janice Footer, Donna Brewer, Cindy Anderson, Ruth Sylvester, Joan Boone, Gladys Long and Clara Hussey.
The Mars Hill, Blaine and Westfield Senior Citizens met at the Mars Hill Snowmobile Club on Wednesday, March 3, at 11 a.m. for a potluck dinner. There were 16 members and one guest present. President Gwen McEntee opened the meeting. Don Cadrette asked the blessing and gave the invocation. Following the flag salute, members sang “God Bless America.”
The special speaker was Rebecca Lagasse, who spoke about heart health, triglycerides and cholesterol.
The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted. The club is planning an outing to Bonanza on March 24 at 11 a.m.
The next meeting will be on March 17. Members are asked to wear green for the corned beef and cabbage dinner planned. The special speaker will be Steve Lunn.
This year’s officers are President Gwen McEntee, Secretary Arlene Wiggins, Treasurer Bob Craig and Chaplain Don Cadrette.
The Golden Age Club met on Tuesday, March 9, at Wicklow Place in Bridgewater. Eight members were present to enjoy a potluck dinner. Don Cadrette asked the blessing and led in the flag salute. The secretary’s and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted.
The club is invited to join the Mars Hill, Blaine and Westfield Senior Citizens on March 17 to hear Steve Lunn speak.
The next regular meeting will be held on March 23, when finger foods will be enjoyed before playing BINGO.
This year’s officers are President and Chaplain Don Cadrette, Secretary Arlene Wiggins, Treasurer Liz Cadrette.
In a continuing effort to recognize outstanding student citizenship, the faculty of Central Aroostook Junior-Senior High School announces that Ashley Estabrook, Abram Brewer and Sage Ashby have been selected as the February Students of the Month. They were selected in recognition of their commitment to the pillar of character. Estabrook
Ashley is a senior who is a member of the Varsity Soccer and Softball teams, and is on the Yearbook Committee and Varsity Club. She enjoys anatomy class and lists hunting, fishing, running and hanging out with friends and family as her favorite pastimes. She plans to attend UMPI to study criminal justice and hopes to become a game warden with the state of Maine. Ashley is the daughter of Anthony and Diana Pottle.
Brewer Abram is a senior and lists Skills USA at the Presque Isle Tech Center, welding and the golf team as his favorite activities. His favorite class is farm mechanics and he lists snowboarding, skiing and golfing as his hobbies. His favorite interests are hanging out with friends, especially his girlfriend. He plans to attend NMCC to study automotive tech body repair and welding. Abram is the son of Russell Brewer and Jamie Brewer.
Ashby Sage is an eighth grader who is a member of band, chorus and the Yearbook Committee. She enjoys all her classes and lists horseback riding and crafts as her favorite pastimes. With an interest in all animals, she plans to go to college to get her degree and work as a veterinarian or park ranger. Sage is the daughter of Jay and Wendy Ashby.
