Peewee hockey team captures state title
The Presque Isle Youth Hockey Peewee hockey team defeated the Auburn Avalanche, 5-0, on Feb. 27 at the Kennebec Ice Arena in Augusta to capture the state championship.
The team had won all four of its games the previous weekend to set up its berth in the title game. Presque Isle defeated the Auburn Eagles, 4-0; Western Maine, 9-4; Lewiston CMYH Gold, 11-0; and Lewiston White, 2-1.
In other recent youth hockey action, the Cary/Pines Atoms defeated the Carleton Devils Feb. 20, 6-0.
Presque Isle held a 38-10 shot advantage, with Thomas Patenaude scoring three of the goals and Tyler Levesque, Eric Benson and Denny Young contributing one apiece. Heinz Schumacher recorded the shutout in goal.
The team played in a tournament in Grand Falls Feb. 13 and 14. Edmunston Honda defeated the Presque Isle squad in the opener, 9-2. Levesque and Young scored goals for the local squad. The player of the game was Devin Ireland.
In the second contest, PI fell to Grand Falls I by a score of 6-0. Benson was named player of the game.
In the third game on Feb. 14, the Kedgwick Grizzlies beat Cary/Pines, 7-2, with Young and Ryan Player scoring for Presque Isle. Sarah Beaulieu was selected as player of the game.
Other contributors over the weekend included Austin Bouchard, Alex Brewer, Gregory Jellison, Isaac Madore and Greyson Sonntag.
