Cookbook fund-raiser to benefit local PTO
By Scott Mitchell Johnson
PRESQUE ISLE – From cookies to corn chowder and meatloaf to monkey bread, the new Presque Isle Elementary PTO Cookbook has something to entice the chef in all of us.
“We decided to do the cookbook as a fund-raiser for our organization,” said Bethany Paterson, PTO president. “The students and staff from both Pine Street Elementary School and Zippel Elementary School provided over 200 recipes which were then typed in by cookbook committee members and then sent off to the publisher.”
Recipes within the soft cover cookbook are broken down into eight categories: appetizers and beverages, soups and salads, vegetables and side dishes, main dishes, breads and rolls, desserts, cookies and candy, and this and that.
“The participation among the children and staff was tremendous; we received a lot of recipes,” said Paterson. “I love the cookbook. It’s very well made, the binding is nice, and there’s a lot of great details like a paw print on either side of the recipe name, for example.”
At the back of the book, there’s a page informing readers what a well-stocked pantry should contain, hints for baking breads, the definitions of various herbs and spices, measurement substitutions, cooking terms, and more.
The cookbook also features an index of contributors, and an index of recipes.
“If you’re looking for your child’s recipe,” Paterson said, “you just look up their name in the back and can then flip right to the recipe. The children really like that.”
Cookbooks are $10 each. Order forms recently went home with the students; however, additional order forms can be found at each elementary school’s main office. In addition to being sold at Merchants on the Corner and Wilder’s Jewelry Store in Presque Isle, the cookbooks will be sold during parent-teacher conferences, spring concerts, and other upcoming PTO-sponsored events.
More than 100 cookbooks have been sold to date. Money raised will help fund the various programs the PTO offers the students including Fitness Night, Science Night, Field Day, assignment books, playground equipment, birthday bags and more.
