Five students from the Woodland Consolidated School put aside their nerves and entertained their classmates, teachers and family members during the school’s 12th Annual Speaking Contest held Feb.3
The event which saw each of the five orators deliver  speeches that covered a variety of topics ranging from a feud between Sacagawea and Pocahontas to the detailed explanation of what goes on during a football game.

Following the speaking competition two winners, one girl and one boy were selected winners by a panel of three judges that included Valerie Bernier, Virginia White and Carol McElwee. The winners were to be announced during the Winter Carnival events that were scheduled to be held Feb. 6. Due to harsh weather that weekend and school vacation, the carnival was postponed until Feb. 27. The speaking contestants were held in limbo until last Saturday when the winners were announced and were crowned the 51st Woodland Consolidated School’s Winter Carnival King and Queen. The 2010 royalty were Matthew Manter and Mariessa Sarmiento.
