LIMESTONE — On Feb. 27, two teams of students from the Maine School of Science and Mathematics (MSSM) competed at the 10th annual Northern New England Regional Science Bowl Competition held at the University of Southern Maine, Gorham Campus’s Bailey Hall. Teams of high school students from Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine went head-to-head in a question and answer format (similar to “Jeopardy”) on all science disciplines, including: biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, earth sciences and mathematics.

Science Bowl competitions increase academic skills, intellectual problem solving and motivate positive outcomes by igniting curiosity, all of which are qualities of a good scientist, according to MSSM educator Sharon Gerrish.
“The Northern New England Science Bowl provides an intellectually stimulating challenge to the participating teams by testing their science and math aptitude in a fun and competitive setting,” she said.
Winning regional teams earn an all expense-paid-trip to the National Science Bowl competition in April in Washington, D.C.
IDEXX Laboratories Inc., National Semiconductor and the University of Southern Maine President and Provost’s offices continue as sponsors for this year’s competition.
