THE MAPLETON UNITED BAPTIST CHURCH youth group enjoyed a morning of snow tubing at Big Rock in Mars Hill Feb. 20. Youth attending were, front row, from left: Daisy Hatcher, Cassidy Clair, Beth Baker, Shane Baker and Joshua Baldwin. Middle row: Quinn Thibault, Brittany Warner, Colin Daigle, Jarod Kilcollins, Jesse Hatcher and Jessica Baldwin.     Thinking Day is the mutual birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout movement, and his wife, Olave, who served as World Chief Guide. This is a day set aside each year for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world to stop and “think” about their sister Scouts and the countries they are from.
This year, the Mapleton troop studied the country of India, as one of the four Girl Scout World Centers, Sangam, is located in Pune, India. Each troop member researched a topic and returned to the group to “teach” what they had learned. Topics included the Indian flag and its meaning, common religions, tourist attractions, currency, language, games played by the children, holidays observed, and forms of transportation. Many of the girls made visual displays to show to the group during their individual presentations.
Juliette Girl Scout and junior at Presque Isle High School, Divya Bisht, was invited to come and share her knowledge and personal experiences of India. Divya wore a beautiful, bright, beaded outfit, commonly worn by women in India. She also brought along other clothing, shoes, bracelets, photos, and dolls all for the girls to look at and a special Indian snack for them to taste. (They all loved the potato balls cooked in chickpea flour). She spoke of her several trips to the country and the fact that her father was born and raised in India and her grandparents still reside there. She taught the girls a few words in Hindi and answered several questions.
Troop members participating in the Thinking Day celebration were Katelyn Amero, Rebecca Rider, Madelyn Buzza, Alexis Getchell, Jenna Mountain, Alexus LaFerriere, Sydney Robichaud and Amanda Winslow. Other troop members that were unable to attend were Delaney Alward, Bethany Baker, Brooke Trask and Paige Trask.
