It marks the first time a Caribou girls ski team has collected a state title.
In the combined Alpine and Nordic scoring, the Caribou girls scored 228 points to finish second behind Yarmouth (138) for the overall title.
“Caribou had a very good state meet,” Viking coach PJ Gorneault said. “Our girls won overall Nordic over Yarmouth after trailing by one point after the first day of freestyle competition. While our boys had a one-point lead over Falmouth after the first day, even with four of the six skiers falling during the race.”
The Viking girls were second in the skate race with 34 points, just one point shy of first-place Yarmouth, while in the Classic event, Caribou was first with 26 points.
“The Classic portion saw the girls take over, winning by 11 points over Yarmouth and securing a 10-point overall win,” Gorneault said. “The boys had a hard time getting their wax to stick on very tough snow conditions, finishing third for classic and third overall.”
In the boys event, Caribou was third overall in the combined Nordic competition with 74 points. Maranacook (68) was first, while Falmouth (73) was second. Caribou was first in the Skate race (34 points), and was third in the Classic race (40 points).
In the state Alpine meet, the Viking girls finished sixth in the Giant Slalom (83 points) and sixth in the Slalom (85 points) to finish fifth overall in the combined Alpine scores with 168 points. Yarmouth won the combined Alpine title with 68 points.
The Caribou boys finished sixth (237 points) in the combined Alpine competition. Yarmouth won the combined event with a low score of 50. The Viking boys were sixth in the Slalom (111 points); sixth in the Giant Slalom (126);
In the Skimeister division, which ranks skiers who compete in all four events (Giant Slalom, Slalom, Skate and Classic), Caribou’s Laura Collins finished second to Yarmouth’s Rebecca Bell. Viking Ginger Kieffer was third.

Caribou girls captures state Nordic ski crown
CARIBOU, Maine — Despite tough skiing conditions, the Caribou Nordic girls ski team skated its way to the State Class B Nordic championship last week. The Viking girls outdistanced second-place Yarmouth by 10 points to secure the team trophy in the cross-country races.
