The season opener for the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department travel basketball teams took place Jan. 16, when both squads played Houlton Southside School. With jitters from being the first game of the season, both teams started out with a bit of a struggle. The young Viking boys’ started out slow in the first quarter, with Paul Hanson’s bucket the only points of the period. Down 18-2 after the first period, Caribou stepped up its defense and shots started to fall. For the remainder of the game, Caribou matched up great with Houlton, but ended up falling short, 50-32.
Caribou scorers were Hanson with nine points, Josiah Krul with eight, Tyler Dombroski with five and Connor Plourde and Mason Huck with three each. Ben Ezzy and Austin Scott both added two points.
The girls played Houlton and was defeated, 53-11, but never gave up and fought hard to try and stop the tall Houlton team. The Caribou girls had a difficult time scoring and rebounding with the mismatches on the court, but gave it their best throughout.
Caribou scorers were Sarah Draper with five points, Madison Doucette with four and Gabrielle Marquis with two.
