Local ski teams took advantage of a day off from school Monday with an Alpine meet at Bigrock in Mars Hill that completed a very busy week of meets. For girls, Caribou placed second in both disciplines to Greenville. Lydia Kieffer of the Vikes was fourth in the GS in 1:37.67 and took third in the slalom in 1:30.84. Ginger Kieffer was fourth in the slalom in 1:36.61.
At Lonesome Pine Trails in Fort Kent Saturday, Caribou’s Lydia Kieffer was the individual runner-up in the GS in 1:42.9, with teammate Liz Barbosa sixth in 1:46.92.
In the boys GS, Caribou’s Ethan McDuffie was seventh in 1:37.28 and Presque Isle’s Curtis was 13th in 1:40.51.
Lydia Kieffer won the slalom in 1:40.47, with Ginger Kieffer fourth in 1:54.64 and Paige Small fifth in 1:59.96 to lead the way for Caribou. Jessica Zbylut and Abby Small were also among the top 10.
The boys slalom saw McDuffie of the Vikings in fourth place in 1:33.22. Other local skiers in the top 10 were Nate Rossignol and Tim Freme of Caribou in ninth and 10th, respectively.
Last Wednesday’s Nordic classic meet in Fort Kent saw the Caribou boys and girls both placing first. Finn Bondeson of the Vikings won in 16:07.1. Teammates Caleb Chapman (16:54.6), Christian Sleeper (17:16.6), DJ Flynn (17:39.4), Jesse Sandstrom (17:44.1) and Jared Sleeper (18:45.4) all finished in the top 10.
In the girls’ meet, Laura Collins and Katelyn Plourde were second and third, respectively, to lead Caribou to the win. Collins came in at 19:46.8 and Plourde at 20:40.1. Ashley Richards of CHS took fifth place (22:02.4), Kendra Stephens seventh (22:10.2), Emily Soderberg eighth (22:26.7) and Meredith Sleeper 10th (22:54.5).
Melissa McKenney of Fort Fairfield was 11th in 23:14.5.
In the latest Nordic meet, 3K classical and freestyle races held in Fort Kent, the Vikings again gained the sweep. Collins was the girls’ classical winner in 8:29.6 and she also took the freestyle in 9:48.
The Caribou boys’ top performance in the classical race came from Bondeson, who was second in 6:55.1. Chapman was the runner-up in freestyle in 8:15.8.
