Caribou Middle School students Nathan Wall and Ricky Perry finalize details for the Jan. 30 Book Fair, that will offer used books, magazines and media items for all ages. Working with Wall and Perry is Beth Alden, CMS teacher who works with students in the Gifted and Talented Program. Proceeds from the used book sale will be used to purchase books for younger readers in grades three and four at Teague Park Elementary School.
The event is a gifted and talented ‘Change’ project, in which students undertake a project that gives back to their community.
Ricky Perry, a grade-seven student and co-chair of the event and Nathan Wall, also in the seventh grade and a member of the committee both stated that they (CMS students) really like to read and want to encourage younger students, especially those in the third and fourth grades to do the same.
Beth Alden, CMS teacher who works with the Gifted and Talented Program said, “These students recognize how fortunate they are and want to give back to the community and the other students. The kids discussed several ideas regarding their, ‘Change,’ project and decided that the book fair would be the best way to be able to help not only their peers at CMS but would allow them to purchase books for the younger students at Teague Park in grades three and four.” Alden continued, “The students have done a good job organizing this project.”
The CMS students are looking for donations of used books and media to resell at their event. Anyone who would like to donate is encouraged to drop off their used items from now until the end of the month at the Caribou Middle School. Paperback books, hard-covers, magazines, videos, DVDs and CDs will be greatly appreciated. Donated items should be in re-sale condition and may be for any age group, including adults.
The student-organized book fair is open to the public on Jan. 30. All money realized from the sale of the used books and media will be used to purchase books for the younger readers at Teague Park Elementary. CMS students will present the new books to the elementary students.
The GT Book Fair project is chaired by CMS students Ricky Perry and Emilee Sirois. Other GT students in grades seven and eight who are committee members include: grade 7, Connor Shaw, Noah Cavender, Morgan Outing, Kristin Macek and Edwin Walker; and grade 8 : Danae McKenna, Corlyn Cavender, Elyse Kiehn, Emilee Sirois, Marina Shaw and Clara Collins.
Any donated books and media items not sold at the book fair will be donated to the Lion’s Share Bookstore in Caribou.
