Perfect season so far for PI, FF girls

    The Presque Isle girls basketball team continued its pursuit for perfection, picking up two more victories on the season to improve to 10-0 on the year. The Wildcats are ranked first in Eastern Class B, according to Tuesday’s edition of the Maine Principals’ Association Heal Points standings. 

    Presque Isle (10-0, 46.4506 points) is 5.7 points ahead of second-ranked Mount Desert Island (9-1, 40.7407) in the region. Caribou (5-4, 19.9074) remains in the playoff mix holding onto the ninth seed in the region.
    In Eastern Class D, Fort Fairfield (9-0, 27.2059 points) is also on a mission to remain undefeated. The Tigers are second in the region, while Central Aroostook (8-2, 26.4343) is third; Washburn (6-5, 21.2963) is fourth; Ashland (6-5, 13.2534) is eighth; Easton (5-5, 9.3046) is 10th; and Limestone-MSSM (2-8, 1.6340) is 17th. Only Limestone-MSSM is out of the playoff picture in Eastern Class D.
    The following is a recap of girls games played through Monday.
    Washburn 59, GHCA 26 — At the University of Maine at Presque Isle Monday, Rebecca Campbell had 22 points to lead Washburn past Greater Houlton Christian Academy. Rayah Saucier chipped in 15 points for the Beavers, while her sister Meghan Saucier added 11; Jordan Chandler, four; Sarah Sjoberg, three; while Cochran and Angie Hernandez both had two.
    Mariah Wiley paced the Eagles with 15 points.
    Washburn led 20-4, 33-4, and 50-19 at the quarter breaks.
    Ashland 65, Van Buren 28 — At Ashland, Adrianna Paradis’ 16-point performance sparked Ashland to the lop-sided win over Van Buren Monday. Brooke LaBelle chipped in 14 points for the Hornets, while Whitney Donovan and Jessica Jimmo both added 12 points; Taylor Baker, seven; and Rylee Graham and Kayla Cote, both had two.
    Ashlie Wilson paced Van Buren with 13 points.
    Ashland actually trailed 18-15 at the end of the first quarter, but by halftime the Hornets seized a 32-20 lead it never relinquished. The Hornets led 49-25 after three stanzas.
    Fort Fairfield 74, Katahdin 34 — At Fort Fairfield Monday, Brooke Beaulieu and Amanda Hotham each scored 15 points to lead Fort Fairfield past Katahdin.     Courtney Churchill added 13 points (all in the first half) for the Tigers, while Kelsey Turner and Danielle Tracy both had nine; Sydney Churchill, six; Kelsie Wilson and Emily Blaisdell, both two; and Rebecca Pelkey, one.
    Olivia McNally and Brittany Fogarty had eight points apiece for the Cougars.
    Fort Fairfield led 21-4, 37-9 and 58-19 at the quarter breaks.
    “That was our best game of the season by far,” Fort Fairfield coach Larry Gardner said. “We came out hard and fast, and shut down McNally with a diamond and one, holding her to just three shots in the first half.”
    Presque Isle 40, John Bapst 37 — At the Bangor Auditorium Saturday, Karlee Bernier tossed in 14 points to pace the Wildcats, while Chandler Guerrette added 13; Kayla Richards, five; and Elizabeth Kofstad and Meredith Stewart, both four.
    Mandy Martin tallied 10 points for John Bapst, which went only 9-for-19 from the foul line.
    Presque Isle led 10-5, 16-9 and 27-21 at the quarter breaks.
    Washburn 41, Ashland 30 — At Washburn Saturday, Rebecca Campbell netted 23 points to lift Washburn past Ashland. Hernandez, Chandler and R. Saucier each had four points, while M. Saucier added three; and Cochran, two.
    Paradis scored 13 points to pace Ashland, while Jimmo added eight; Baker, four; LaBelle, three; and Graham and Cote, both one.
    Washburn led 8-2, 23-11 and 31-16 at the quarter breaks.
    Fort Fairfield 49, Limestone-MSSM 20 —At Limestone Saturday, Hotham tossed in 18 points, while Beaulieu added 11 and Churchill seven to spark the Tigers to victory over Limestone-MSSM. Stephanie Leighton paced the Eagles with seven points, while Jasmine Cote added six.
    Fort Fairfield led 17-2, 29-5, and 44-9 at the quarter breaks.
    Ashland 35, Easton 29 — At Easton Jan. 7, Ashland overcame a slow start with a strong third quarter. Easton led 5-3 in the first quarter, but Ashland clung to a 14-13 lead at the break. That lead grew to 30-21 by the end of the third quarter.
    Baker netted 12 points to lead Ashland, while Chelsea Hammond added seven; Jimmo, six; Paradis, five; and Graham, Donovan and Pelkey, each had four.
    Arianna Babineau led Easton with 14 points, while Brooke Hammond added seven; Carla Halvorson, four; Danielle Dudley, two; and Sydney Trask and Mindy Desmond, both one.
    Fort Fairfield 66, Hodgdon 44 — At Fort Fairfield Jan. 6, Amanda Hotham poured in 23 points to lead Fort Fairfield past Hodgdon. Brooke Beaulieu contributed 10 points for the Tigers, while Tracy and Wilson both added nine; C. Churchill, six; Blaisdell and York, both three.
    Chelsea Sloat paced Hodgdon with 18 points, while Destiny Ellis added seven; Haley Quint and Emmaly Jurson, both six; Whitney Wallace, four; Jillian London, two; and Kimberly Levesque, one.
    The two squads were tied 10-10 in the first quarter, before Fort Fairfield seized a 28-15 lead at the break. The Tigers led 52-27 after three stanzas.
    CAHS 35, Madawaska 30 — At Mars Hill Jan. 6, Vicki McIntyre scored 11 points as Central Aroostook held off Madawaska.
    Rachael Grew chipped in 10 points for the Panthers, while Kristen Long added seven; Chelsea Hartin, five; and Brooke Hartin, two.
    Emma Dionne scored 14 points for the Owls.
    The two squads were tied 8-8 after one quarter, and the Panthers clung to a 19-18 edge at the break. That lead grew to 30-26 after three stanzas.
    Presque Isle 53, Fort Kent 39 — At Presque Isle Jan. 5, Haley Johnston scored 13 points while Guerrette contributed 11 points; Bernier and Richards, both nine; Kofstad, five; and Nickerson and Lynds, both three for the Wildcats.
    Sam Carapellucci and Andrea Nadeau led Fort Kent with 10 points apiece.
    Presque Isle led 25-11, 37-27 and 46-27 at the quarter breaks.
