The first round of the 2010 National Geographic Bee will be held at Easton Junior/Senior High School on Jan. 13 at 9 a.m.
For the 22nd year, the National Geographic Society is holding the National Geographic Bee for students in the sixth through eighth grades in thousands of schools across the United States and in the five U.S. territories, as well as in the Department of Defense Dependents Schools around the world.
The winner of the Easton Junior/Senior High School Bee will advance to the next level of competition, a written examination. All school winners are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $25,000 college scholarship, at the National Competition held on May 25 and 26 in Washington, D.C.
Corey White, a senior at Easton High School, was presented with a plaque on Saturday night at the Easton High School basketball game. Corey was presented the award by Mrs. Ireland, the High School principal and Steve Shaw, the athletic director. White scored more than 50 goals in his High School career at Easton.
Great job, Corey. He was also congratulated by Brad Trask who has the highest amount of goals, scoring over 60 in his high school career.

Paula and Terry White spent Christmas Day with their sons, Shawn and Dan, and their families in the Portland area.
The next day the couple flew to New Mexico to spend a week with their daughter, Amber Walker. Capt. Walker is stationed at Holloman AFB with her husband, John, and daughter, McKenna. The Whites enjoyed their time in the Southwest, including the day they were surprised with a snowstorm.
They returned safely home without any storm delays.
On Jan. 13, Matthew Maxwell, Brenna Maxwell, Joel Hall, Kim Richardson and Doug Blackstone all have birthdays. A special birthday wish to my Pastor (Matt) and his daughter. Bless you and have a great day.
On Jan. 14, Heidi Wakefield will celebrate her birthday.
Tristen Woodworth and Alta Rattray will be another year older on Jan. 15.
On Jan 16, Debbie Dionne, Amber Richardson, Sarah Alexander, Lauren Roix and Jarvis Holmes all have birthdays.
Celebrating their birthdays on Jan. 17 are: Mike Hewitt, Nichole Hitchcock and Bailee Getchell.
On Jan. 18, James Lloyd, Mike Brown and Nina Trask have a special day to celebrate. Happy birthday Aunt Nina.

Congratulations to the Elks’ Hoop Shoot Contest winners: Dominic Fredette, Mariah Cyr, Jacob Flewelling, Sara Gilman, Carson Flewelling and Brenley Fredette.
Little Bears basketball will begin practices Saturday, Jan. 16. The first and second graders will practice from 9-10 a.m. and third and fourth graders from 10-11:15 a.m. These teams are co-ed.
In February, the groups will begin scrimmages and have a special clinic with the UMPI Owls basketball team.
All practices will be held in the Elementary School Gym. Their season will run approximately six weeks. To register please contact the Recreation Department at eastonrec@myfairpoint.net or call 551-7737.
All-Star Gymnastic will be teaching an eight-week session of gymnastics classes from Feb. 3 through March 31 in Mars Hill. The cost is $40 or $30 for each additional child from the same family. Classes will be held in Mars Hill but transportation will be provided. Class will run from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. (with another class added if necessary).
We must have a minimum of eight to 10 children to run this program. Open to ages 4 and up. Pre-registration is required.
Mark your calendars for Easton Recreation Department’s Winter Carnival on Feb. 25, 26 and 27. Activities will include laser tag, family game night, cribbage tournament, sliding party, community supper, mother-daughter/father-son basketball games and more!
Wednesday, Jan. 13 — Junior activities for ages 2 through ECP at the hall from 9:30-11 a.m. YAP (Youth Advocacy Program) will meet at 11:30 a.m. with the 5th 6th graders and at noon for the 7th and 8th graders in the elementary school cafeteria. Senior exercise class starting at 1 p.m. in the recreation room at the manor.
Thursday, Jan. 14 — Craft Day after school at the hall until 4:15. Come and be creative.
Friday, Jan. 15 — Playgroup for ages 2 through kindergarten at the hall from 9:30-11 a.m. Seniors’ field trip to the Hampton Inn and out for lunch. The bus will depart from the manor driveway at 11 a.m. Participants are responsible for their own meals. Everyone welcome!
Monday, Jan. 18 — No recreation activities due to the holiday.
Tuesday, Jan. 19 — Cross-country skiing after school until 4:15 p.m. at the Ferris’s home on Lander Rd.
