In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the Houlton High School Civil Rights Team is hosting a free community dinner.
The event will be held at the Houlton Lodge of Elks building from 5-6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 18. The menu will include homemade beef stew with accompaniments cooked by Civil Rights Team members and other student volunteers. Everyone is invited to share good food and conversation.
While people often think of Martin Luther King in connection with civil and voting rights, he also spoke often about the rights of all people to be free from hunger and want and also of the power that is generated by people coming together around a common goal such as ending poverty.
During the dinner, the Civil Rights Team will be both sharing and collecting information about food needs and resources in southern Aroostook County through informational posters and surveys. Team members will be contacting local food pantries this week to find out what is available so the information can be shared.
