It was a quiet week on the basketball courts for local high school boys teams, due to Christmas and a snowstorm two days earlier which postponed Presque Isle’s scheduled home game against Fort Kent to Jan. 11. The Wildcats were beaten for the first time this season Monday, losing to Ellsworth by five points at home. The Easton Bears also lost a pair of contests.
Summaries of games played through Monday are as follows:
Ellsworth 69, Presque Isle 64 – At Presque Isle Monday, Ellsworth dealt the Wildcats their first loss of the season by taking a 13-point lead midway through the fourth quarter and holding off the late-charging Wildcats.
The score was tied at the end of three quarters before the Eagles capitalized on a number of PI turnovers and took a commanding lead. PI’s Oliver Zubrick connected on a layup inside of a minute to play to cut the deficit to three, but Ellsworth hit some late foul shots to come out on top.
Ryan Petros scored a game-high 23 points for the Eagles, including six in the final period, while Brad Folmer added 10 points, seven coming over the final eight minutes of play.
Travis Dyer scored 19 points and Zubrick had 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead the now 5-1 Wildcats. Dillon Kingsbury and Alex Tuttle each added 11 points.
GHCA 71, Easton 55 – At the University of Maine-Presque Isle Monday, Micah Wiley scored a game-high 27 points, including an 11-for-14 effort from the line in the fourth quarter, as GHCA defeated Easton.
Chad Duff contributed 18 points and Ethan Holmes added another 15 for the 5-1 Eagles.
Holden Turner scored 12 points, while Luke Fuller and Luke Budreau each had 10 for the Bears.
Southern Aroostook 68, Easton 61 – At Easton Saturday, the host Bears outscored their opponents 26-15 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough in their game against the Warriors.
SA improved to 3-1 by building an 18-point advantage after three quarters and holding off Easton’s late rally.
Cody Robinson scored 18 points, Patrick Goodall and Dakota Sleeper netted 17 each and Jesse Small had 16 for the Warriors.
Easton, which drew to within four points with 2-1/2 minutes to play, was paced by Reid Clark, who fired in 20 points. Budreau was the only other Bear in double figures with 12.
