Aroostook Times

    Gift — Masters Leland and Richard Ludwig received a Shetland pony from their parents as a Christmas present.
    Court Street — This local street was the scene of some lively brushes between the local horses Saturday afternoon. The roadway was too soft for good driving, but some good horses were tried out. Houlton has some fast ones, both old and young and when the new course on the Meduxnekeag Shore is completed it is expected that some speed will be shown.


75 Years Ago-Dec. 27, 1934

Houlton Pioneer Times

    Liquor Store — The Houlton Liquor Store, one of eight established in Maine by the State Liquor commission opened here Monday to an orderly and quiet rush. 489 customers were served with a gross business of $781.60.
    Houlton homes — The Houlton Garden Club announced this year’s winners of the Home Decorating Contest. They was a tie between, John K. McKay, Bangor Street and S.A. Bennett, Highland Avenue, Second prize, Aaron Putnam, North Street; third place, Leonard McNair, Kelleran Street.
    Junior-Hi-Lites — The first issue of the new “Junior Hi-Lites,” the school newspaper was published Tuesday. This is made up of stories, poems, jokes, news and editorials. More than 125 copies have been sold. Features in the issue were by Phyllis Drake, Phyllis Anderson and Harold Tyrell and Houlton 75 years ago by Helen Cumming.

    Houlton Water Company — Plans are underway for a sewage treatment plant for Houlton.
    C.D. Police Reserve Unit — Twenty-five men have been selected by Officer John Fowler to take training in Houlton’s Police Reserve Unit.
    Red Cross Chairman — Norman Rogerson, chairman of the Southern Aroostook Chapter, American Red Cross announced at a recent fund campaign planning meeting that Donald Edwards of Houlton has accepted the appointment as General Chairman of the March 1960 Campaign of the Red Cross for funds and members.
    Employees feted — The employees of the Northland Hotel enjoyed a Christmas party on Sunday evening at the Elm Room of the hotel with 40 present. A buffet supper was served, gifts were exchanged and Christmas bonuses were presented to the guests.
    Young Mothers Club — The members of the Young Mothers Club entertained their husbands at a Christmas party at the home of Mrs. Jack Daniels. A box was packed for a needy family and a social evening was enjoyed with an exchange of gifts. Guests present were, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Daniels, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Garcelon, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Garcelon, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Reardon, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Flagg, Mr. and Mrs. Beecher Mosher, Mr. and Mrs. Cedric Brooks and Mr. and Mrs. Adrian Bishop.

    Timberlands — Lynds Machine Shop on the North Road will continue business as usual in the New Year, but as of Jan. 1 the name will be changed to Timberland Machines, Inc.
    Sherman Mills — Mr. and Mrs. Robert MacArthur and family have moved from Patten to the Durgan house near Woodbridge Corner. They are former residents of Sherman Mills.
    Meritorious Award — Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew K. Quint, son of Wayne F. and Lorraine D. Quint has been awarded a Meritorious Mast while serving with the 2nd Force Service Support Group, Camp Lejeune, N.C. Qunit is a 1983 graduate of Houlton High School.
    Jenkins recognized — Phillip A. Jenkins, Customs Inspector in Houlton, was presented a certificate and tie tac in recognition of the completion of 40 years of federal service.
    Water Company — The Board of Directors, retirees and employees of the Houlton Water Company met at the Parkview Terrace December 15 for their annual Christmas Party. Sixty-two were present. A buffet dinner was served followed by a social evening. Social activities included musical numbers by Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Haggerty and Mrs. Galen Hogan, a scotch auction and exchange of gifts.
