Recycling locations now have cardboard dumpsters

The Tri-Community Landfill has expanded its recycling program. “We have been trying for some time to figure out a method to facilitate resident’s cardboard material and now we placed these dumpsters next to the igloos for just that purpose,” said Mark Draper, director.

The newest additions to the Tri-Community Landfill recycling incentives are now in place next to the existing igloos in Caribou, Limestone and Fort Fairfield. The newly placed dumpsters are for corrugated cardboard boxes only.

The newly designated drop-off container is for corrugated cardboard only, the brown, double-layered boxes that have the crinkled filler. Draper said that each of the dumpsters provided have a six-inch slot in which residents can slide the cardboard through. In order to do this, all boxes must be flattened — the lids of the dumpsters are secured, preventing random items from being disposed of.
“We do request that recyclers do not bale or place their cardboard in bags when dropped off, just flatten the boxes and slide them into the container,”     draper explained.
The Tri-Community Landfill Association owns the cardboard dumpsters, however, according to Draper, commercial haulers will be responsible for picking up the contents. Commercial businesses which will pick up the cardboard are, in Caribou, McNeal’s Trucking; in Limestone, Morin’s Sanitation and in Fort Fairfield, Adams’ Sanitation.
“The commercial haulers will receive 50 percent of the revenue, gained through this process,” said Draper. “Once the material is collected and we have marketed it then the percentage is determined.
Draper stated that the FCLA appreciates the recycling efforts of area residents and is in hopes now the private sector also has a place to rid themselves of corrugated cardboard that more individuals will decide that if they are making a special effort to dispose of the cardboard, they will also take advantage of the four other existing recycling igloos.
As a reminder Draper commented that it would be appreciated if residents would not include the plastic bags that stove pellets come packaged in. He also requests recyclers remember that the plastics igloo is for HDPE #2, clear milk jugs only. HDPE 2 colored is for colored plastic containers but not wide-mouth bottles such as detergent containers or Cool-Whip bowls; this is for narrow mouth bottles only.
The recycling igloos are colored and are for the following items only: blue, colored plastic only; red, milk jugs; yellow, newspapers; gray, tin cans; and green for magazines.
Locations of the Tri-Community Landfill recycling containers are: in Caribou, at the Public Works garage, the vacant lot between S.W. Collins and One Vaughn Place and at Highway Tire; in Limestone, igloos are at the Public Works garage; and in Fort Fairfield, at the Public Works location.
