The Central Aroostook Panthers bounced back from a loss at Washburn Friday to register an important win over Southern Aroostook on the road Monday. It was the first victory by coach Rodney Codrey’s team after two losses to begin the campaign.
Presque Isle took an overnight trip over the weekend and picked up a pair of victories, topping Mattanawcook Friday and Old Town Saturday. Combined with a lopsided win over Houlton earlier in the week, PI was 4-0 entering last night’s game in Caribou.
Summaries of games played through Monday are as follows:
CAHS 60, SAHS 47 — At Dyer Brook Monday, Central Aroostook used a 15-5 third quarter to rally past Southern Aroostook. Rachel Grew paced the Panthers with 20 points, while Vicky McIntyre chipped in 14; Kristen Long 11; Chelsea Hartin, nine; Brianna Hartin, three; and and Sarah Grass two.
Liz Goodall led the Warriors with 20 points and Jasmine Rockwell added nine.
Southern Aroostook led 16-15 in the first quarter, but the Panthers took a 30-25 halftime lead and also led 45-30 after three stanzas.
Ashland 41, GHCA 19 — At the University of Maine-Presque Isle Monday, Anna Paradis scored 15 points to lift Ashland (2-2) over Greater Houlton Christian Academy (1-2). Other Hornet scorers were Labelle, nine; Baker, seven; Donovan, three; Macie Pelkey, Jessica Jimmo and Kayla Cote, each with two; and Tilley one.
McKenzie McGuire led the Eagles with seven points.
Ashland led 7-0, 25-4 and 29-10 at the quarter breaks.
Presque Isle 41, Old Town 25— At Old Town Saturday, Presque Isle jumped to a 14-2 first quarter lead it never relinquished. Karlee Bernier led the Wildcats with 17 points, including five 3-pointers. Other Presque Isle scorers were Chandler Guerrette and Kayla Richards, both six; Chelsea Nickerson and Meredith Stewart, both five; and Elizabeth Kofstad, two.
Presque Isle led 14-2, 23-9 and 31-13 at the quarter breaks.
Presque Isle 35, Mattanawcook Academy 27 — At Lincoln Friday, the Wildcats rolled to the eight-point victory as Richards led the way with 13 points, including 11 free throws. Nickerson chipped in with 11 rebounds and four steals.
Presque Isle 49, Houlton 27 — At Houlton Dec. 8, Karlee Bernier scored a game-high 12 points including to two three-pointers to pace the Wildcats. Other Presque Isle scorers were Kofstad, Guerrette and Richards, each eight; Nickerson, six; Ireland, five; and Stewart, two.
Vanessa Sanderson tallied 11 points to lead the Shiretowners.
Easton 86, East Grand 33 — At Danforth Saturday, Carla Halvorson scored 29 points as Easton cruised past East Grand.
Brooke Hammond added 21 points for Easton, while Mindy Desmond had 14; Sydney Trask, 12; Ariana Babineau, 10.
Easton led 14-4, 39-12 and 62-19 at the quarter breaks.
Southern Aroostook 52, Ashland 18 — At Dyer Brook Saturday, the Hornets were outmatched by Southern Aroostook. Jimmo led Ashland in scoring with six points, while Baker and Jade Tilley both had four; and Anna Paradis and Rylee Graham both had two.
Ashland trailed 12-4, 31-11 and 41-14 at the quarter breaks.
“I was actually happy with some of the things we did in this game,” Ashland coach Kevin Paradis said. “Southern Aroostook is a very good team. They put up a 3-2 offensive trap that we were able to break. Our biggest problem is that we have difficulties to score. Eventually these shots will start to drop for us.”
Washburn 32, Central Aroostook 31 — At Washburn Friday, Washburn’s Becca Campbell hit the game-winning shot to lift the Beavers past Central Aroostook. Campbell tallied 15 points, while Chandler added eight; Saucier and Sperry, both three; Sjoberg, two and Hernandez, one.
Vicki McIntyre led Central Aroostook with 13 points, while Grass added seven; Long, five, Grew, four; and Cushman, two.
Washburn 57, Hodgdon 40 — At Hodgdon Dec. 8, Rebecca Campbell registered a game-high 35 points to spark Washburn. Chelsea Sloat netted 18 points to lead Hodgdon while Cierra Willette added 11.
