MDOC publications, DVD available for holidays

    AUGUSTA — The Maine Department of Conservation is again promoting its publications and DVD as perfect holiday gifts.
    The items are available through the MDOC, and more information is available at: http://www.maine.gov/doc.     Items this year include:
• “Your Maine Lands: Reflections of a Maine Guide” by Tom Hanrahan — available for $12, including tax and shipping. This unique collection of essays runs the gamut from grouse and bobcat hunting to camping and hiking to preparedness in the wilderness. These essays by one of Maine’s most popular writers speak to the intense, wild beauty of the lands owned by the people of Maine.
• “Forest Trees of Maine, Centennial Edition 1908-2008” — available for $15. Also available on a CD for the same price, includes tax and shipping. One of the MDOC’s most popular books, “FTM” features detailed pictures and descriptions of Maine’s native trees, in a spiral binding that makes it easy and convenient to read and perfect to put in a backpack. Please note that, contrary to previous news releases, the price has changed.
• “Maine’s Fossil Record: The Paleozoic” by Lisa Churchill-Dickson. Available for: hardcover, $40 plus $2 sales tax; or soft cover, $30 plus $1.50 sales tax — includes shipping. This 500-page book is the most comprehensive treatise on Maine’s bedrock fossils ever published. The primary purpose of this book is to serve as a stand-alone reference for Maine’s Paleozoic paleontology, whether it is for the interested layperson or professional geoscientist.
• “Northrunner: The Allagash Wilderness Waterway” — available for $16.50, which includes tax and shipping. This outstanding, professionally done DVD has been featured on Maine Public Broadcasting Network and remains a favorite of all those who love Maine’s deep forests and waterways. “Northrunner” tells the story of the AWW and shows the beauty of this special place in Maine.
