A 2:50 a.m. call to the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department Monday, Dec. 14, prompted three fire trucks, an ambulance and 14 firefighters to respond the scene of a trailer fire at Linda’s Down Home Trailer Park on Route 89. Caribou Fire Chief Roy Woods reported the trailer, owned by Linda Fortin, was rented and occupied by Michael Fisher. “Something apparently awakened him, whether it was his dog or the smoke, it wasn’t clear, but he barely escaped the trailer in time, he was very fortunate to get out.”
According to Chief Woods, Fisher, who managed to climb out through a bedroom window, was transported to Cary Medical Center where he was treated for lacerations and smoke inhalation.
Caribou Fire and Ambulance personnel were at the scene for two and one-half hours fighting the early morning blaze.
“It was a good stop by our men,” stated Chief Woods, “the trailer is still standing although severely damaged but Mr. Fisher and his dog were able to escape.” Chief Woods also commented that as of Monday afternoon it was still uncertain as to whether or not a pet cat had been lost in the fire.
Chief Woods reported that the cause of the fire was to be determined by the State Fire Marshal’s office.
There were no smoke alarms in the residence and the trailer was not insured.
According to Joyce Knorr, Aroostook County branch manager of the Pine Tree chapter of the American Red Cross, “The Red Cross has been contacted and is currently in the process of providing emergency relief assistance.”
