HIRSCH, Glenna R., Presque Isle, December 11, 2009. A brief graveside service will precede the interment at the Caribou Veteran’s Cemetery on December 16, at 10 a.m. Arrangements in the care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle.
Presque Isle – Glenna Rowena (Gooding) Hirsch passed away peacefully in her sleep on Dec. 11, 2009, after suffering from severe and prolonged illnesses. Glenna lived most of her life in Presque Isle with brief forays to Wheeling, WV, Somerville, MA, and Houlton, ME. Having been predeceased by her husband, the late, great, Jerry J. Hirsch, she carried on as matriarch for her family. ‘Family’ is what Glenna was all about – she was always there when any of her children needed her; she played second mother to many of her children’s friends; and she even found time to spend as mentor to several neighborhood kids.
For many years, Glenna was confined to her home due to agoraphobia, however she remained an incredibly social person – it’s just that the activity had to come to her. She was an avid reader and loved musical plays and movies. Since Glenna had a mischievous side to her, she instigated the infamous summertime “neighborhood water fight” that encompassed three surrounding blocks. She got many calls that day from other mothers thanking her for the free washing of their kitchen floors.
Glenna was fiercely loyal to her children and grandchildren who will miss her immensely. Glenna is survived by her mother, Gladys I. Gooding (98) of Presque Isle; her son, Joseph J. Hirsch of Lyman, his wife Kimberley and their two boys – Matthew and Nathan; her daughter, Carlene J. Hirsch of Bangor; and granddaughter, Hannah; and her daughter Susan (Hirsch) Goulet of Presque Isle, and her husband Shawn and their children – Brenden and Kate. She will be fondly remembered by her sister-in-law, Kathleen Gooding and her extra special niece, Alison Gooding, both of Houlton; her niece, Debra Whitthuhn of Wheeling, WV as well as many other friends and relatives. Glenna’s family wishes to thank special friends and neighbors who helped take such good care of her – Keith and Cheryl Boulier.
A brief graveside service will precede the interment at the Caribou Veteran’s cemetery in Caribou, ME on Dec. 16, at 10 a.m., with the Rev Dr. Robert Grove-Markwood officiating. A gathering will be held directly following the service at the Goulet home in Presque Isle. In lieu of flowers, individuals may make a donation, in her name, to the American Diabetes Association.
