Gift baskets
The Easton Kiwanis Club met on Nov. 17, with 12 members present. A chicken stew, rolls and dessert were enjoyed, with Barbara Blackstone asking grace.
After supper, President Mike Allen opened the meeting with the salute to the flag and a prayer by Harold Clark. The president reported that the benefit supper for an unnamed cancer victim should be held. It was suggested by Harold Clark that new Kiwanis Club signs should be purchased to update the ones now seen beside the roads.
Thanksgiving baskets were discussed and decided upon. It was voted to hold the Christmas meeting on Dec. 1, and members are asked to bring a guest. They also decided that instead of a Yankee swap, it would be more fitting if members brought gifts for children to put into the Christmas baskets. They were told that tweens and teenagers do not have as many gifts donated as do the tiny tots. The supper at this meeting will be ham and the rest will be potluck. The supper crew would like to know just how many might be coming, so please let Loris Allen know if you are bringing a guest.
Plans are in the works to hold another day in town, possibly at the Country Farms Market, to collect toys for the Christmas baskets. When this is finalized, there will be signs with time and place posted in the store and at Ferris’s One Stop.
Mike informed the group that the 2010 calendars won’t be ready until January.
The Kiwanis Club would like to tell those who donated to the Cilley supper just how much they appreciated their donations to the supper and silent auction. Donors included: Studio Looks, C&L Auto, Dick’s Transmission, Industrial Street One Stop, The Sled Shop, Theriault Equipment, Harry’s Motor Sports, Star City IGA, Country Farms Market, Lidia Yoder, Joe York, McCain’s, Caribou Save A Lot, Friends Market, Postmaster Brenda Bailey, Eldora Carter and Kevin Campbell. If there is anyone we missed, please forgive us.
It was also suggested that the Easton Kiwanis Club might help out the Salvation Army this year with collections.
Present for the meeting were: Mike and Loris Allen, Clair and Eldora Carter, Esther and Keith Richardson, Mike Cyr, Bernard Hussey, Lt. Governor Barbara Blackstone, Jessica Blackstone, Irene DaFonte and Harold Clark.
Methodist Women meet
The Easton United Methodist Women held their Nov. 17 meeting at the home of Marie Hewitt in West Ridge Manor, with only four members being able to attend. President Eldora Carter led devotions and a prayer for those on the prayer list. The word for the month was ‘thanksgiving.’ The United Methodist Purpose was read. There was no secretary’s report in the absence of the secretary. The treasurer’s report was read and accepted and it was reported that there are still four baby quilts, one large one and one queen-sized quilt on hand for sale. The group made 28 visits since last meeting.
Under new business, the president gave out membership cards to those who had not received one. She also reported that the doll and 10 outfits did not sell at the Mars Hill United Methodist Women’s sale this fall. It was hoped that this doll made by Dale Blanchard might sell and that the two UMW’s would split the money. It was voted to complete the Five Star Program with a special mission pin to go to a special person in the church and the memorial donation in memory of a deceased member, Hilda Langely. It was also voted to give a gift card for groceries in the sum of $30 to two different families this Thanksgiving.
Those in attendance were: Lindy Fowler, Glenice Craig, Eldora Carter and the hostess who served pumpkin pie, cream puffs and tea. A fellowship time followed.
Visitors
Mike and Beth Carter, of Portland, came home on Saturday, Nov. 14, to spend three days with his parents, Clair and Eldora Carter. While here, Mike did some work on the house for them. The next weekend another son, Wendall, and his wife, Doreen Carter, drove up from Saco. On their way they stopped at the University of Maine in Orono to pick up their son, Kyle, so he could come along with them. They were only able to stay overnight until later the next day because Kyle had to get back to Orono. While here, Wendall was driven about Easton to see all the new buildings on the Amish farms and the new houses that have been built that he had not seen before. He was surprised at the growth of the town.
Bud and Sally Budreau had some visitors over the Thanksgiving week. Sara, Sally’s daughter, and Sally’s husband, Matt, and their daughter, Alyssa, came up from Pennsylvania. They stayed a few days and then went on to visit with some of Matt’s relatives in Massachusetts.
Mark and Carole Smith were weekend guests of Ezalee Smith, Mark’s mom. They also visited with other family members while they were home.
Chris and Olivia Smith were home from Portland over Thanksgiving weekend to visit with Chris’ mom and dad, Debbie and Vance Smith.
