AVILLA, INDIANA – Sheldon M. Durost, of Avilla, Indiana, formerly of Mars Hill and Presque Isle, Maine, passed away unexpectedly when the bicycle he was riding was struck by a motorist, September 21, 2009. He was 53 years of age. Sheldon was born in Mars Hill, Maine, September 19, 1956, the son of the Rev. Theodore F. Durost (deceased) and Lois Hubbard Durost.
He lived for many years in Alaska and considered Alaska the home of his heart. He had been an avid bicyclist for more than 30 years and was recognized by many, in the Mars Hill area, for his enthusiasm to ride during the winter months. He was an outdoor enthusiast and, while in Alaska, he toured the state on bicycle, camping out, and avoiding close calls with the wildlife that inhabit the state. He took many wonderful photos to commemorate his Alaskan adventure. For the last several years, Sheldon had been his Mom’s primary caregiver enabling her to live independently and with dignity. He will be greatly missed by the residents of the Provena LaVerna Terrace Apartments, in Avilla, where he so willingly, and with “gentle” assistance, helped the elderly, and those incapacitated by illness, to live easier lives.
He is survived by his mother, Lois Durost, of Avilla, Indiana; a sister, Lynn (Durost) Lombard, and her husband, Richard, of Caribou; and a brother, Anthony Durost, of Spencer, Indiana.
A memorial service, with interment following, will be held in the spring at the Pierce Cemetery, Mars Hill, Maine.
