100 Years Ago-Dec. 1, 1909
Aroostook Times

    Littleton — Charles Bruce sold a fine mink to Mr. Smart of Houlton.
    Houlton— C.E. Irvine wishes to announce that he has discontinued his High Street Grocery and has re-opened in more commodious quarters in the Pioneer building, where he will be pleased to serve both old and new customers.
    Racing — The Gentlemen’s Driving Club has leveled the westerly shore of the Meduxnekeag, below the footbridge and will at once lay out a half-mile straightway track for the winter racing. In the spring the track will be graded and put into shape for the summer training.
    On exhibit — Six turnips of the Rutabaga variety, weighing 83 pounds are on exhibition at Starkey’s provision store. The largest weighs 16 pounds. They were raised by Charles Starkey.

    Island Falls — At the annual meeting of Aroostook and Penobscot Pomona Grange, Arnold Storm was elected worthy master for both counties.
    Post Office — The Washington, D.C. firm of Ross & Reid, Inc. was the sole bidder on the new Houlton Post Office with a price of $73,737.
    Littleton — The Harrigan School has received some improvements. The swings have been finished. One swing for Miss Carmichael’s room and one for Mrs. Hitchcock’s room. Mr. Chase made the bolts and rings for the swings, Mr. Cumming supplied the rope; Mr. Crane, Mr. Woodworth, Mr. Lunn and the older boys of the school put the swings up.

    Houlton Publishing Company — Ralph L. Long, a veteran with five years with the Hearst organization in Boston and Chicago and a former Maine weekly newspaper publisher has become associated with the Houlton Publishing Co. in an executive capacity.
    WHOU — Keith Stine has been hired as sales manager of WHOU and resigned from WAGM-TV in Presque Isle.
    Teachers guests — The Houlton Women’s Club entertained the teachers of Houlton Schools at the Northland Hotel,
    Hi-Y Conference —Francis Beaulieu and Kevin Cowperthwaite were in Portland where they attended the Older Boys Conference as Hi-Y delegates of Houlton High School. They were accompanied by Cecil Garcelon, Jr.
    Christmas lights — The Christmas lights will illuminate the business district until the Christmas season is over and will officially be turned on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving according to President Oscar F. French of the Houlton Chamber of Commerce.

    Promoted — Darrell Malone, a lieutenant with the Houlton Police Department since 1976 and the acting chief since the dismissal of James Brown was approved as Police Chief by the Houlton Town Council.
    Past Nobel Grands — The Past Noble Grands met at the IOOF Hall for a picnic supper. The supper committee was Clara Huggard, Elva Adams, Mabel McNutt and Helen Thorne.
    All-Stars — Members of the Houlton High School soccer teams who received special recognition this fall are, Caroline Holden and Lisa Astle, honorable mention; Tony Degenhardt, first team; Mary Harrigan and Amanda Dunphy, Eastern Maine All-State team.
    Head-to-head — New Shiretowner Coach Brian Plourde will match his team, this weekend, against former HHS coach Matt Rossignol, now at Van Buren.
    Clukey in recital — Kelly Clukey will give a solo recital at USM. Clukey, a flutist, also plays piano, guitar and is an alto vocalist. She received the Talent Award at the Miss Maine Pageant in 1981.
