Editor’s note: The Expect More Dollar Store recently held a grand opening, celebrating the new location of the business on Main St. in Caribou. The discount retail operation recently moved from Bennett Drive to the structure, which once housed the Woolworth Store and later was known as Dan’s Living Center.
Today I Cried
How prim and proper
We grown-ups can be,
We smile such nice smiles
Like nothing is wrong,
And I smile along with the rest
But today my emotions got the best of me,
And I was wanting to cry.
It was only “an old store opening”,
But a trip down Memory Lane for me,
Remembering the old Five and Dime,
And the way it used to be
With our seven children trailing,
And my husband shopping with me.
But that’s been gone so many years
We thought it was gone forever, never to be
But today we saw the old town light up,
Renewal was in the air.
Today our downtown came alive
With the Dollar Store on the Main Street.
We older folk couldn’t believe our eyes,
To see so many cars parked in town,
And everyone headed for the Dollar Store.
The store itself was super,
Everything looked so nice,
So nice in fact, I wanted one of everything,
And for once I could afford the price!
Just walking down those aisles once more
Was a reverie I won’t soon forget.
I almost let those hot tears fall.
My heartfelt thanks goes to the Sleepers
Who’ve served us through the years,
Who’ve stayed by the staff and persevered,
And always called Caribou their home.
Happy days, they were back then
Shopping at the Five and Dime,
But today we’re welcoming the Dollar Store
You’ve made Caribou come alive!
