Composer Samuel Hazo to speak on music advocacy
PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle brings to campus a musical composer, whose work has been performed with Brooke Shields and James Earl Jones, when it hosts Samuel Hazo as its third Distinguished Lecturer of the 2009-2010 academic year. Hazo will speak at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 30, in the Campus Center about how music helps us all to become better students and citizens of the world during his talk “The New Face of Music Advocacy” — a message for music lovers, educators and community members alike. He will discuss the importance and the benefits of participating in music programs and in keeping music in schools and in our lives beyond school. Hazo will also serve as a special guest conductor during the UMPI/Community Band Winter Concert in Wieden Auditorium on Monday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. The morning lecture and evening concert are free and the public is invited to attend both events. Concert to feature composer Sam Hazo
PRESQUE ISLE — The UMPI/Community Band, directed by Kevin Kinsey, celebrates its 11th year of concerts with a special evening of compositions by renowned Pittsburgh conductor/composer Samuel R. Hazo. Hazo, who is in Maine on a speaking tour, will be on hand at the concert to guest conduct and narrate his works.
The concert, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Nov. 30, in Wieden Auditorium at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, will feature songs, all composed by Hazo. Just a few of the featured works include: “Voices of the Sky,” “Solas Ane” (Gaelic: “Yesterday’s Joy”), “Fantasy On A Japanese Folk Song,” “Perthshire Majesty” (winner of the 2003 William D. Revelli Composition Contest), “Rest” (based on “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”) and “Whisper To Their Souls” (based on “Greensleeves”). Also included are “…Go!” (an unpublished Maine premier); and “Bridges – for Wind Symphony and Orator” (written as a memorial to the shooting victims at Virginia Tech University on April 16, 2007, with composer narrating).
Earlier in the day, at 10 a.m. in the UMPI Campus Center, Hazo will offer a talk, “The New Face of Music Advocacy,” discussing the importance and the benefits of participating in music programs and in keeping music in schools and in our lives. Wind experts to speak at UMPI Business Breakfast
PRESQUE ISLE — Leaders Encouraging Aroostook Development (LEAD), Northern Maine Community College (NMCC) and the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) are hosting a December Business Breakfast featuring two wind experts. Kurt Adams, the executive vice president and chief development officer for First Wind, and Mr. Wayne Kilcollins, NMCC wind power technology instructor, will address The Future of the Wind Business in Aroostook County, beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, in the UMPI Campus Center.
