Singer/songwriters Aztec Two-Step creators, Rex Fowler, left and Neal Shulman, will be performing a tribute to the music of Simon and Garfunkel, Saturday, Nov. 21, onstage at the Caribou Performing Arts Center.
Aztec Two-Step is made up of singer/songwriters Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman. After a chance meeting in 1971 at an open mic in Boston the two joined forces and recorded a total of eight original studio albums that have received world-wide critical acclaim during their remarkable 38-year career.
Fowler has commented that, “the upcoming performance in Caribou will not be as much a folk concert as a multi-cultural event that will entertain music lovers of all ages.” Fowler, who grew up in Pittsfield and attended the University of Maine at Presque Isle, went so far as to compare the show to something closer to a Broadway musical without all the props and fanfare.
Since their 1972 self-titled debut album on Electra Records and three RCA record albums that have sold over one million copies, Fowler and Shulman have released 12 albums in total and have toured throughout the U.S. as well as internationally.
Headliners in their own right, the duo has also appeared in concert with such notable artists as Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, The Band, Bette Midler, the Beach Boys, America, Bonnie Raitt, Heart, Bill Cosby, Judy Collins, the Smothers Brothers and many more. Fowler, the principal songwriter of the group, was influenced by many of the stalwart songwriters of the 1960s including Paul Simon, Neil Young, Donovan, John Lennon and Bob Dylan. “Simon and Garfunkel are the greatest duo of all time,” commented Fowler. “It’s an honor to perform their amazing song canon.”
“Just as Paul Simon once said there’d be no Simon and Garfunkel without the Everly Brothers, I think it’s safe to say there would’ve been no Aztec Two-Step without Simon and Garfunkel,” commented Shulman, “and in that context, it’s all the more rewarding for us to interpret their music.”
Many selections from the Simon and Garfunkel songbook will to be performed during CPAC concert, including, “A Hazy Shade of Winter,” “At the Zoo,” “Cecelia”, “I am A Rock,” “Mrs. Robinson”, “Scarborough Fair,” “Sound of Silence”, “The Boxer,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and more. In addition, Aztec Two-Step will also feature a few fan-favorites from their own amazing collection of songs.
