Grades 5 and 6 NMCRA Tournament
Eight teams took to the fields at Johnson Athletic Complex on a chilly Saturday morning, Oct. 17, to decide the 2009 county championship for grades 5 and 6 soccer.
The fans who braved the cold were rewarded with an excellent day of soccer as six of the seven games held were decided by a single goal. The best was no doubt saved for last, as for the second straight year Washburn and Presque Isle met up in a ‘keep you on the edge of your seat’ masterpiece. The game was so entertaining the two sides decided to treat their fans to two bonus periods and a round of penalty kicks before a winner was decided.
Washburn’s Jarrett Olson blasted home the deciding kick and handled net minding chores to propel Washburn to the title for the second year in a row, 2-1. Denny Young had the lone PI goal late in the second half off a penalty kick.
Washburn reached the finals by narrowly beating Easton 2-1 in overtime in the semifinals and eking past Mars Hill, 3-2, in the quarters. Presque Isle knocked off Fort Fairfield by a 2-1 final in the semis after trouncing Ashland 6-0 in the day’s first game. Madawaska and St. Agatha also took part in the tournament.
