SMYRNA MILLS & PORTLAND, OR – Byron L. Haines, associate professor emeritus of philosophy at Portland (Oregon) State University, died at age 71 of a heart attack on May 28, 2008. He was born December 24, 1936, in Houlton, the son of Linwoods and Opel (Shaw) Haines of Smyrna Mills.
    He graduated from Oakfield High School in 1954. He excelled in baseball and basketball throughout his years at Oakfield High School. After graduating from high school, he attended Bates College in Lewiston and graduated in 1956 with a degree in philosophy. While in college, he played basketball for Bates Bobcats. After serving three years in the U.S. Army, Byron pursued graduate studies at the University of Washington where he earned M.A. (1963) and Ph.D. (1966) degrees. Joining the Portland State College (later Portland State University) faculty in 1965, he served on the faculty for 43 years, until his death in 2008.
    Byron was married to Leslie Spalding, who predeceased him in 1999. He was also predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Malinn L. Haines; foster daughter, Cecilia Orphan; one gradnchild; and a brother, Bernald Haines, of Jessup, MD.
