No room to complain if you don’t vote

To the editor:
Election Day is right around the corner, and Citizens for Responsible City Management (CFRCM) would like to encourage each and every one of you to exercise your right and privilege to vote. There are two seats available on the city council. Your vote could make a difference in the direction in which the city will go in the future.
Your vote can make a difference. I have heard the argument, “but I rent an apartment and don’t pay property tax.” Yes, but your landlord does, and what he pays does affect the rent you pay. I’ve even heard the argument, “I don’t bother to vote, and I’m too old to care anymore.” Then do it for your family and friends who are still in the workforce and still trying to make ends meet. Vote, if not for your tax dollar, then for theirs.
There are some new names on the ballot this year. Some names may be unfamiliar to you. Ask questions; know your candidates. Ask yourself if you are satisfied with the present administration. Many, many of you are not. CFRCM heard this over and over again when we were circulating the petition last July.
Statistics show that people who are unfamiliar with the candidates tend to vote according to the alphabet, but this practice can have detrimental consequences.
This is your chance to make a change in the privacy of the voting booth, or by absentee ballot, which is available now. Anyone can request one. It’s time for a change. Let’s think outside the box. Perhaps the unfamiliar is just what this city needs. Whatever your views, please vote. It’s the only way you, the taxpayer, will have a say in city government.
The next meeting of CFRCM will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Van Buren Road Lodge. All are welcome. And check out CaribouWatch.com.
