Some things that I love about Houlton

To the editor:
I was thinking about how lucky we are to live here in Houlton, Maine. It is a beautiful town that seems to be getting better all the time. There are always many things going on for people to do that encompasses a wide range of interests. The nicest thing is how everyone is so friendly; you can strike up a conversation with anyone whether you are in a grocery store or out taking a walk.
Here are some of the things that really stand out for me:
• The feeling of safety. I know that if I go out walking that I am not going to get mugged. If I am at home, it is highly unlikely that someone is going to come in with intent to do hard.
• Amazingly, we live in a town where you can still pump your gas without having to pay first. If you happen to have forgotten your wallet, instead of calling the police, the service station attendant will let you go home and get your wallet.
• Having a veterinarian (and staff) who actually sent us a sympathy card when our dog passed away.
• Having the nicest, kindest dentist who actually cares if I am in pain and will stop drilling until I am ready.
• My kindly neighbor who lives across the street. She always will call me and let me know if I have forgotten to shut my garage door at night or if I have left a tool out.
• The lady at the oil company who always remember to call me when I am going to get a delivery. If I have had service on the furnace she will call later to make sure everything is working all right.
• The bank officer at our bank who cares about his customers. He will take time out of his busy day to call customers and give advice.
• Our mailman who will take time to ring the doorbell if he is going to leave a package on the doorstep.
• Living in a safe, quiet neighborhood where everyone pretty much keeps to themselves and does their own thing. Even though we rarely see each other or chat I think that in an emergency we all know that we can count on each other.
Thanks to all!
