HOULTON, Maine — Ten Houlton Elementary School teachers accepted $100 gift cards from Walmart to offset expenses for school supplies in a surprise move that had students cheering.
Principal Candace Crane selected the teachers in a random drawing for the Teacher Reward Cards at an informal ceremony. “Our school was immensely surprised and thrilled to be recipients of this gift. The teachers were informed of this opportunity at an assembly with the students. Ten staff members’ names were drawn from a container. When the teachers’ names were called all of the
students cheered. It was very uplifting. A perfect Kodak moment,” said Crane.
“Walmart is committed to helping address  unmet needs in the communities we serve. Our support for Houlton Elementary School underscores this commitment, and we are hopeful that through the Teacher Rewards program, these educators will be able to purchase the materials needed for the new school year,” said Jacinda St. Pierre, assistant manager in the Houlton store.
The national Teacher Rewards program is sponsored by Walmart and Sam’s Club to provide more than $4 million to 40,000 teachers across the United States.
