The regular season is now a fond memory for high school golfers as some teams are gearing up for Saturday’s team championships at Natanis Golf Course, while others must look to next season.

At the Penobscot Valley League Championship Thursday, Presque Isle finished a solid second in the Class B division, which qualified the Wildcats for the state team championships to be played Saturday, Oct. 10 at Natanis Golf Course in Vassalboro.
“We did very well this weekend,” Presque Isle coach Jim York said. “We finished second in Class B PVC, just one shot behind Mattanawcook [344-345].”
Individual scores for Presque Isle at the match, held at Jato in Lincoln, were: Evan Waddell, 81; Alex Tuttle, 86; Travis Dyer, 89; Jordan Hallett, 89; and Keenan Eaton, 99.
Waddell and Tuttle also both qualified for the state individual championships, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 17 also at Natanis. Caribou’s Caleb Chapman also qualified by shooting an 87. Only 25 out of 125 golfers qualified for states.
Presque Isle finished its regular season with a 7-2 record, losing to PVC champion Houlton by four strokes for the division crown. Mattanawcook’s and Houlton’s only regular season losses were to Presque Isle.
Competing in this weekend’s Class C state meet will be both Fort Fairfield and Central Aroostook, by virtue of their placement in the Sept. 18 qualifier held at Aroostoook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield.
In regular season action at the Houlton Community Golf Course Sept. 30, Presque Isle fell to Houlton by a mere four strokes, 167-171.
The individual Wildcat results were: Dyer, 46; Waddell, 45; Tuttle, 41; Eaton, 42; Hallett, 44; Adam Flynn, 44; Matt Freeman, 44; and Zach Campbell, 48.
It was just Presque Isle’s second loss of the season. The other came against Mattanawcook.
