Shire golfers win PVC, regional titles

The Houlton High School varsity golf team captured the Penobscot Valley Conference and Regional titles last Thursday at JaTo Highlands in Lincoln to qualify for the state championship this Saturday.
The Shires shot a team score of 335 to place first, followed by George Stevens, 358; Penobscot Valley, 359 and Deer Isle-Stonington, 368.
“It was a miserable day (with rain showers),” Nason said. “It was tough to get through. But, they did a great job. They played great and it is a nice way to start the playoffs.”
The team score was decided by the top four golfers’ scores. Ian Gervais led the way for the Shires shooting a 78, while Nick Chase followed with an 81. Logan Shaffer tallied an 87, Gage Flewelling, 89 and Ethan Quint, 97, Parker Sanderson, 91 and Mike Ring, 94.
At Natanis this weekend, the Shires will be facing tough competition. Nason would like to see his squad shoot under 320.

The PVC Championship also served as the Individual Qualifier for state competition, with Gervais and Chase to play in the state individual meet also at Natanis on Oct. 17.
Last Tuesday, the Shiretowners avenged an earlier loss to Presque Isle, as they defeated the visitors 167-171.
Houlton’s Shaffer picked up low medalist honors with a 37.
Gervais shot a 42, while Chase, Flewelling and Ring all scored 44s. Sanderson tallied a 46 and Quint a 47. Rounding out the team scores were: Ben Flewelling, 49; Isaac Brown, 62 and Zach Ritchie, 69.
