SILVER RIDGE – Clara Deloris (Beattie) Mayo, 78, went to be with our Lord on September 29, 2009. The youngest of nine children, Clara was born March 7, 1931, to Brad and Lena (Grant) Beattie. Hers was not an easy childhood. Her mother passed away of cancer when she was just a year old, and her father was killed by a milk truck 2 years later. She grew up and spent the remainder of her childhood on the Beattie farm in Patten/Crystal where she was raised by her two loving, bachelor uncles, Ora and Earl Beattie.
Clara was married for 61 years to Robert Charles Mayo and resided with him until her passing at his family's homestead in Silver Ridge. Together they had two children, Wayne Robert and Velma Deloris. Deloris died of a brain tumor when she was just 6 years of age, and Wayne resides with his wife Cindy in Sangerville. For many years Clara was employed by Foster Manufactuing Co. of Mattawamkeag, and she also worked for Canteen Service in Bangor while her son attended UMO. She was a devout Christian and a member of the Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church of East Millinocket. On July 1st of this year, Cara was transported to Boston where she underwent two major surgeries before being returned to EMMC where she could be visited by family. Multiple complications prevented her recovery.
Besides her husband and son, Clara is survived by two grandsons, Shawn of Old Town along with his wife, Robin, and Kary of Orrington; her sister, Louella Wilcox of Milo, MO; six great-grandchildren, Shane, Kayla, Parker, Kaleb, Clara and Ethan; several cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. The family wishes to extend special thanks and appreciation to Clara's sister Louella, nephew Ora Young and his wife, Betty and neighbors Ron and Norma Winchenbach and Joan Allen Thibodeau for their love and support during this difficult time.
Friends and family called 6-8 p.m. Friday, October 2, at the Patten Pentecostal Church where funeral services were held 1 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Regginal Adams officiating. Interment was in the Silver Ridge Cemetery. Arrangements by Bowers Funeral Home, Island Falls.
