The battle for civilization

To the editor:
Michael Heath of Augusta has said that the marriage act is a battle for civilization and that it violates every precept of humanity by allowing the marriage act to come to pass. By definition a civilization is a culture, how we treat each other. Mr. Heath has forgotten history I guess, because America was founded on tolerance, respect and dignity and honor, America was also a refuge for those fleeing the Old World and the persecution.     America means freedom, justice and equality. Hate is hate, no mater what way you play it. It has nothing to do with civilization, it has to do with arrogance and hate and fear. I do not know what Mr. Heath and his friends are afraid of — marriage has been around for millennia, so how does letting people have the right to choose who they love and how they celebrate that love endanger us? Society and civilization in America is not under attack, tolerance, equality, justice are not the enemy.
