Mapleton Girl Scout Troop 292 enjoys summer trip

Mapleton Girl Scout Troop 292 traveled to Burnt Island Light House Station off the coast of Boothbay Harbor for three days in June to mark the end of the Scouting year.

On the way to the island, the girls visited the Maine State Aquarium in Boothbay. Following the tour of the aquarium, they boarded a boat for the trip to the island, where they stayed for three days and two nights. While on the island, the troop took part in many activities including learning how to read a navigational chart, going on a compass hike, taking part in a survival study and squid dissection, learning how to use a GPS, going geocaching, and collecting and reviewing ocean shore creatures. They also toured the inside Light House, which included an exciting climb to the top! The girls were invited to a living history presentation, and also viewed the historic lighthouse photographs.
Other fun activities included beach combing, island bingo and fishing from the dock. A “hands-on” fishing trip with “Dan the Lobster Man” was enjoyed where the girls got to ride the fishing boat, pull the traps, measure and band the live lobsters!
These amazing three days would not have been possible without our Girl Scout leaders and adult volunteers! Special thanks to Valerie Black, Kim Theriault, Nancy Winslow, Heidi Graham, Pat Cole, Kelly Martin and Jennifer Player for making the trip with the girls.

Little Known Holidays
Sunday, Sept. 28 marks “National Good Neighbor Day.” According to my favorite Web site where I find “little known holidays,” holidayinsights.com, Mrs. Becky Mattson from Lakeside, Mont. recognized the importance of good neighbors and started the effort to make this a national day in the early 1970s. With the help of Congressman Mike Mansfield, she succeeded in getting three presidents (Nixon, Ford and Carter) to issue proclamations. In 2003, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution, sponsored by Montana Sen. Max Baucus, making Sept. 28 National Good Neighbor Day. Previously, this day was celebrated on the fourth Sunday of September. Can you think of a way to be “neighborly” on this day? Since fall officially arrived yesterday, could you help your neighbor prepare for the winter season? What about raking the lawn? Maybe you haven’t even met your neighbor. Wouldn’t this be a great opportunity to take the time to introduce yourself?
